Kenyas airport is all set to have a ground-mounted, 500 KW solar system installed. Solarcentury a solar business tycoon stated that it had a contract signed with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for the solar system installation.
Solarcentury said the photovoltaic system will produce 8, 20,000 KW hours of energy per year and reduce 1,300 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. Solarcentury also stated that the installation would make Moi International Airport the first East Africa to have a solar photovoltaic system installed. Construction duration is of 10 months, with the solar electricity production by 2019.
The work is funded by European Union with 6.5 million euro, and implemented by ICAO. The program targets 14 countries with the aim of carbon dioxide emission in aviation sector.
Jonny Andersen, the Managing Director for Kenya Airport Authority stated that the expected savings on electricity as well as reduction in carbon emissions would contribute towards the efficient operations of Moi International Airport.
Moi International Airport joined to the list of airports which maintain solar power. Hawaiis department of transportation said it would install 4,260 solar modules at Honolulus Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in July. Indias Cochin International Airport, in the state of Kerala, is one of the worlds first fully powered by Solar Energy. It houses more than 46,100 solar panels.
